Escape from Singapore - Painting build up

For some reason all I could see in my mind was a boot. Nothing but a boot.
One of the projects Twenty First Century Bohemian Productions is involved in is the visualization of the story I am writing about a couple of RAF pilots in WW2.
We are going to try to bring alive (in film) a portion of the story involving the Battle of Ceylon. This is the opening scene. Its called escape from Singapore. I though I would try to visualize a "cell" of the movie freehand, then moving on up to full color.
This first image is a pencil on scrap paper drawing of the scene as I saw it in my mind.

The second is the first
The second is the first attempt to draw it in Photoshop. I have corrected some of the flaws in the pencil sketch (like the boot being wrong.
The third sketch is more of the build-up. When I am done, I hope I will have something resembling an RAF pilot running for his life down an oxcart path near a beach (to the left) and jungle (to the right).

Sophie mentioned that the running man had a "Hank Hill" butt (I'm a guy, like I know guys butts... heheheh).
I tried to fix that and add some more detail.

Cleaning up the trees and thinning out the beech, then I will redo the left tree tops to raise them up a tad and center the heads over the stem.
